Caution-free Race Highlights Challenges for Lotus HVM Racing

Edmonton, AB (Sunday, July 22, 2012) - Race day at the Edmonton Indy dawned bright and sunny with literally not a cloud in the sky. Although Lotus HVM Racing driver Simona De Silvestro qualified the #78 Nuclear Clean Air Energy entry 23rd, she started 25th on the grid after incurring a 10-spot penalty for an unapproved engine change.
De Silvestro was fast all day in the corners and ran very good lap times throughout the race, but lacked the speed on the straightaways to make any significant gains during the race. The Swiss driver did pull off a nice pass of the #20 Fuzzy's Vodka car on lap 17, but relinquished the spot a few laps later when she came in for a green-flag pit stop. She ultimately finished 23rd in the caution-free race that lasted less than 1 hour 40 minutes and saw only five lead changes.
The lack of yellow flags didn't work in the team's favor. "It was kind of a weird day," De Silvestro said, "no yellows so we couldn't really get off strategy. We had to make one more stop than most everybody else because our fuel consumption is pretty bad. You know, it is what it is. We had a strong race car, but we're just not fast enough right now."
Keith Wiggins, team owner, agreed that the green-flag racing hurt the team's chances. "It was a good run for the team," he said. "Clearly our lap times in the race were competitive, but unfortunately the fuel mileage, the lack of top speed and the fact that there wasn't a single yellow in the race really hurt us. We had to do an extra stop and that just makes it tough. She (Simona) did a good race and the car was fast on the corners, so we just have to keep working on the other issues."
After suffering a mechanical failure in Toronto, team manager Shane Seneviratne was pleased that the team finished today's race. "It was good to finish the race," he said. "We had decent pace but there's still the same problem. We need to keep working on our engine to try and close the gap and make the races more interesting for us".
Lotus HVM Racing next goes to Lexington, Ohio for the Honda Indy 200 Mid-Ohio on August 5. The race will air on ABC at 1:00 p.m. ET
